A little piece of San Francisco in Wellington!30 March 2006
"It is never too late to become what you might havebeen." George Eliot Presenting The San Francisco BathHouse Indigo Bar and Venue, now under new ownership, isundergoing a name change, a rebrand and a re-fit. From AprilThe San Francisco Bathhouse will be the place to experiencelive music in Wellington. The San Francisco Bath House isnow owned and operated by two successful Wellingtonians, both vastly experienced in bar management and the businessof entertainment. Tim Ward brought us Hole in The Wall wayback in the 90 s, moved on to start The Matterhorn, theshort lived Shopping club and more recently with currentpartner Clinton den Heyer, Good Luck Bar. Clinton is an oldschool Wellington scenester, formerly part of Welly rockersWeta, Clinton traveled the globe working bars and starsbefore settling back into Cuba Street life again, partneringwith Tim in Good Luck and now SFBH. After research intoboth the history of the venue and live music venuesworldwide, Tim and Clinton decided to re-brand Indigo underone of the venue s former names 'The San Francisco BathHouse . This name stirs imagery of the past and parallelsthe international movement of sites reverting to theirhistorical names such as the Knitting Factory, Grocery, ChicHall s Surf Club and The Beauty Bar. This drift towardshistorical names immerses venues in their past, giving thema resource to draw from in their marketing, branding, theirdécor and soul. 171 Cuba Street was built in the 1920 s asa purpose built factory for the assembly of shoes. Later asmanufacturing was pushed out of the now inner city awrestling gym, Koolman s Gym, was named after its patron. His children, now in their fifties clearly remember itsgrand entrance and ascending the stairs to the gym afterschool to watch their father give classes. When the Gymceased to operate a natural next tenant was a Bathhouse. TheSan Francisco Bath House utilized the existing showeringfacilities and the grand entrance, adding a steam room andplunge pool. Decorated with mosaic tiling it was not ahumble retreat but a lush after work escape. The SanFrancisco Bath House moved to another old restaurantdistrict, Willis Street where it continued to exist untilthe early 80s. But now 171 Cuba Street became the home offishermen, as the interior was paper machéd into stalagmitesand stalactites. Partnered with Sydney and Hong Kong, CubaStreet, Wellington, was renowned amongst merchant seamen andfishermen as a great place to party. The street itselfdescended into recession and no middle class housewife wouldshop there for many years to come. The venue carried severalnames over the shortest part of its history - The Cave, AliBaba s, Staxs, Tycody s (named after the proprietor s sonsTy and Cody), Sonic Temple, Stilettos (a Hell s Angels stripbar) Stilettos lasted two weeks until Wellington s onlygirly bar mogul ran the boys back to their pad inBerhampore. At this stage the building seemed to have amultitude of layers as every bar, club or strip joint thatoccupied it added more and more. Enter Adrian, the founderof Indigo. Adrian did the hard yards removing the layers butfailed to reveal much in terms of character. Stephenfollowed, the name continued, and Adrian s vision of liveinternational and national acts was realised. But not byStephen s doing, it was in fact his Human Resourcescapability of locating Mr. B. Moran. Brendan, along with acore of loyal and friendly staff, still ply the boards thatmake up The San Francisco Bath House. As The San FranciscoBath House the venue continues to support and engage thebest national and international performers on its stage, bringing a quality mid size venue to all music lovers. Witha focus on the acts and an open music policy, The SanFrancisco Bath House is committed to providing quality toWellington. Acts coming up in April and May include TheSkatalites, The Mountain Goats, The Opensouls, A Low Hum,Pluto, Atomic and The PhoenixFoundation. One is psychological and the other is legal and fiscal. On the psychological front is the mental disposition of the Christian Peacemaker hostages themselves. Although they are to be admired for the courage of their convictions and the fact that they actually engage in direct action rather than just talk, the CPT workers held captive in Iraq display traits remarkably akin to those of Islamic jihadists and Iraqi resistance fighters.
