Adaptec Announces Storage Industry's Broadest Family of Internal Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Storage Solutions17 October 2005
Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader
in storage solutions, today announced the industry's broadest family of
internal Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) products including a new Adaptec SAS
Host Bus Adapter (HBA), two Adaptec SAS RAID controllers, one for PCI-X and
one for PCIe servers, a four-bay internal storage enclosure and the Adaptec
Advanced Data Protection Suite. Adaptec also announced two SAS subsystems
(see related release titled "Adaptec Strengthens External Storage Product
Line with Two SAS Storage Subsystems"). With this extensive SAS product
line, Adaptec is the first vendor enabling system builders and enterprises
to easily deploy a variety of SAS storage solutions to meet a wide range of
performance, capacity, and cost requirements.
SAS is the next generation SCSI interface that delivers significant
improvements in scalability, performance, reliability, and flexibility over
parallel SCSI by leveraging a serial architecture for data transport. SAS
provides an ideal solution for businesses with substantial storage capacity
requirements, demanding transaction-oriented applications, and throughput
intensive data environments. Adaptec, a pioneer and leader in parallel SCSI
for 20 years, is currently leading the transition to SAS with more than
44,000 SAS devices shipped since January 2005 through its Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) customers. Now, Adaptec is delivering the
broadest range of proven SAS products to the channel.

Adaptec Server-Optimized SAS Product Family
The Adaptec SAS product family delivers a complete solution for internal
and external storage. Adaptec internal SAS products are designed to be
interoperable with Adaptec SAS external storage products (see related
Adaptec SAS Subsystems release) as well as 3rd party offerings to allow
customers to deploy a complete, trusted SAS solution. In addition, Adaptec
Storage Manager™ software provides the critical centralized management,
monitoring and configuration capabilities across all Adaptec RAID products
to simplify management in enterprise deployments. The product line
consists of:
Adaptec Serial Attached SCSI 48300 Card: SAS connectivity that is
especially suited for increasing performance in audio/video streaming and
I/O intensive applications. The Adaptec 48300 low profile form factor HBA
features eight 3.0Gb/s SAS or SATA ports configured as one x4 internal
connector for internal drives and one x4 external connector for JBOD
expansion. Adaptec trusted HostRAID™ offers data protection via RAID
levels 0, 1, 10 (RAID 10 available in November). Prices start at $360 USD
Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).
Adaptec Serial Attached SCSI RAID 4800SAS and 4805SAS Controllers: High
performance, 8-port RAID controllers for SAS storage environments that can
be easily added to a server using either a PCI-X or PCIe host interface
slot. Both support SAS or SATA drives and have two internal x4 connectors
and an external x4 connector for JBOD expansion. They come with 128MB of
ECC-protected DDR2 DRAM and standard RAID levels 0, 1, 10, 5, 50. Adaptec
RAID Code (ARC) offers increased data protection and simplified maintenance
that includes Hot Swap, Hot Spares, RAID Level Migration, Online Capacity
Expansion, and Optimized Disk Utilization. Additional features are
available through the Advanced Data Protection Suite enhancement option.
Adaptec SAS RAID controllers are available starting at an MSRP of $945 USD
for the 4800SAS and $995 USD for the 4805SAS.
Adaptec Storage Enclosure 335SAS : The Adaptec 335SAS is a unique Adaptec
product designed to facilitate simple, low-risk production SAS deployments
in a variety of existing server environments. It is a highly reliable,
hot-swappable 3.5" 4 bay internal enclosure that accommodates both SAS and
SATA drives. With SES2 enclosure management, active cooling, audible alarm
plus failure indication LEDs, and slim CD-ROM bay, the Adaptec 335SAS
provides optimal performance and reliability. Up to two enclosures can be
supported by a single Adaptec SAS or SATA II RAID card. Prices start at
$369 USD MSRP.
Advanced Data Protection Suite: With this collection of optional software
features, Adaptec RAID controllers offer the highest level of data
protection in the industry. Five unique features make up this suite: Hot
Space (RAID-5EE) allows users to distribute the hot spare disk space across
the array in order to increase performance. Dual Drive Failure Protection
(patent-pending RAID 6 implementation) provides extra fault tolerance
against data loss with the ability to survive the simultaneous failure of
two drives. Striped Mirror (RAID-1E) delivers RAID 1 protection across more
than two drives including an odd number of drives for enhanced performance.
Snapshot Backup helps users manage data by taking point-in-time snapshots
to simplify tape or disk backup. Copyback Hot Spare improves tracking and
maintenance by automatically reconfiguring a disk cabinet to the original
hot spare location after replacing a failed drive. Users can activate the
Advanced Data Protection Suite via license key. Pricing and feature
availability will be announced by year end.
Adaptec Serial Attached SCSI 48300 Card is currently available through
distribution to resellers and through the Adaptec online store. All other
Adaptec server-optimized SAS products will be available in November.
Adaptec Enabling SAS Support Ecosystem
In an effort to enable a seamless migration to SAS for its customers and
reseller partners, Adaptec has established an infrastructure of SAS support
programs. These programs include introductory SAS tutorials, certified
technical training courses, an online SAS education center, storage advisor
weblog, bundled SAS product evaluation and starter kits for resellers and
end users, and the Adaptec Trusted SAS Compatibility Lab for multi-vendor
testing of interoperability between Adaptec and 3rd party SAS products.
