"Practically Invisible," a vivid, heart-wrenching novel about survival, love, and heartache set in the woods adjacent a small town in Virginia, was released today by Rebel's Domain Publishing. "Practically Invisible" is the first in a series of novels called «The China Doll Trilogy» by Kevin McDonald. McDonald is vice president of Alvaka Networks, a leading computer managed-services and security firm based in Orange County.

Many early readers of the book have expressed surprise that McDonald, an influential computer industry executive, had written such a story. He is known for being tough and aggressive in his business dealings. But if someone brings up the subject of abused children and the epidemic of runaways and throwaways, the deep passion that drives him quickly emerges. «We must recognize that thousands of our kids are living a nightmare on the streets,» McDonald said. «These kids are not running for excitement or enjoyment. They are running because of neglect and/or physical, sexual, and psychological abuse.»
McDonald says there is no excuse for allowing these kids to remain invisible to us. According to the NIS–3 studies cited by The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the number of U.S. youth estimated to have had a runaway/thrownaway episode in 1999 (the latest data available) was 1,682,900. Of those kids, 1,190,900 or (71 percent) were estimated to be endangered. Sadly there isn't any real data on how many remain on the streets. In 1993, it was estimated that 56,900 children were permanently abandoned. Many of these kids are forced to sell themselves to sexual predators or resort to crime just to survive.
«When Kevin McDonald approached me about this story, I was shocked to learn how this subject is such a well-kept national secret.
