BMC Software Simplifies Backup and Recovery for Mainframe Environments, Cuts Cost of Managing Higher Data Loads

20 June 2006

Responding to customer requests for simpler mainframe backup and recovery, BMC Software has integrated its IMS backup and recovery functionality into its Web-based console, enabling database administrators (DBAs) to easily identify and resolve data-recovery issues more quickly.

BMC is now the only IMS vendor to have all of its IMS tools integrated into one common console, allowing the customer to more easily maintain "always on" information availability -- key to supporting vital business services -- in the most complex mainframe environments, without increasing support costs.

"BMC's Backup and Recovery Solution for IMS has had a significant impact in our daily operations, reducing our daily backup times by over 80 percent," said Steve Stewart, DBA technical analyst, Total System Services. "As a leading outsourcer for payment services, we must have systems available at all times so customers can use their credit and debit cards to make purchases, whether online or in person. We simply can't afford to have our IMS production systems unavailable. BMC's Backup and Recovery solution is unique in its ability to provide us that level of assurance."

With the addition of new IMS backup and recovery capabilities to BMC's Web-based console, DBAs can now see both reorganization and recovery events on the same screen, allowing for better informed decisions. In addition, the new software helps DBAs more easily monitor, identify, prevent and resolve IMS database and system problems before they affect the business.

"Providing our customers with maximum insight into their database is key to their success," said Bill Miller, vice president, Mainframe Service Management Business Unit, BMC Software. "With the introduction of IMS back- up and recovery information into the Web console, BMC is minimizing the complexities associated with database management while helping to lower the cost of managing data across the enterprise."

The integration of BMC's Backup and Recovery Solution for IMS into the console enables IMS DBAs to monitor the progress of a recovery action generated in reaction to an event identified by the Recovery Advisor component of the Backup and Recovery Solution. Additionally, the ease of functionality and viewing allows DBAs who are not IMS experts to easily identify and solve recovery problems more quickly. With a click of a button, DBAs can now find a potential or current problem with a database and receive a quick list of choices as to how to solve the issue. In addition, the Backup and Recovery for IMS added into the console allows DBAs to meet Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for backup and recovery.
