CHW Hosts Make Time For Fitness Day at AT&T Park

26 June 2006

* 23% of all adults in the Golden State are obese.

* 40% of all California children are not physically fit.

* The total cost of physical inactivity each year is more than $13

billion.

* California adults consume, on average, fewer than four servings of

If you guessed that all of the above are correct, you're right.

To highlight the importance of staying fit and eating right, Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the Giants official healthcare provider, and the San Francisco Giants, are again hosting Make Time For Fitness Day at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The first 5,000 fans to the ballpark for the 1:05 p.m. game vs. the Oakland A's will receive a CHW Stretch Band that can be used for a variety of muscle-strengthening exercises. The CHW Stretch Band is designed to supplement an overall fitness and conditioning program.

"Make Time For Fitness Day emphasizes the importance of regular exercise and eating right," said James De Soto, MD, of CHW. "Working with the San Francisco Giants, CHW and its not-for-profit hospitals are focused on promoting healthy lifestyle choices throughout the Bay Area."

Make Time For Fitness Day is part of CHW's broader commitment to community health, which includes a comprehensive range of programs and informational services. CHW, in conjunction with the Giants, created a Make Time For Fitness Day Walking Course at AT&T Park, which Giants fans can use during any home game. CHW and the Giants also sponsor Make Time For Fitness Walking Courses at schools in the Bay Area.

At http://www.chwHEALTH.org, under the Health & Wellness section, CHW provides a variety of information to promote health, fitness and proper diet. The website includes a link to e-mail questions to Giants Head Trainer Stan Conte, nutritional and wellness libraries, and information about fitness and weight loss. CHW's interactive tools include calculators for body mass, ideal weight, nutritional values, and the impact of smoking and drinking alcohol.

CHW's not-for-profit hospitals in the Bay Area include Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, and Saint Francis Health Center at AT&T Park.

"Californians will feel great if they eat right and make time for fitness," said Dr. De Soto. "Exercise and proper diet are the foundation of a

healthy lifestyle, and the healthcare professionals at Catholic Healthcare West are here to encourage individuals and communities to make smart choices."
