Data Protection Management and Backup Reporting Helps Companies with the Complexity of Compliance

6 July 2005

As a direct result of federal regulations like Sarbanes-Oxley Act and The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), internal IT controls and procedures related to data protection and recovery must be fully documented, certified and auditable. As the demand to meet compliance requirements increases, so does the need to bolster security, storage and backup reporting in IT.

The road to full compliance is not simple and for many organizations these regulations consume a great deal of time and budget. According to the Adobe/RSA Security study released June 2005, legislation is expected to continue to evolve over time, creating new compliance requirements that demand constant corporate attention and consume resources.

Since the bulk of most companies’ financial information and other important data are created, transmitted, maintained and stored electronically, IT shoulders the lion’s share of the responsibility for data protection to meet compliance requirements. Backup performance reliability is an important element in data protection management. Automated solutions such as Bocada® BackupReport® can assist companies in meeting compliance requirements by automating the process of monitoring and reporting on backup and data protection efforts.

Compliance audits require control and documentation of data protection and management efforts. Automated backup reporting provides the collection, analysis and delivery of comprehensive information on the performance and results of all data protection efforts and can assist companies in meeting audits quickly and efficiently. In fact, more than 30 enterprise customers of Bocada, such as Valero Energy Corporation, Catholic Healthcare Partners and Aegon, chose BackupReport to ensure their data protection operations comply with regulations and internal policies and successfully pass federal regulatory compliance audits of their data backup operations.

"Data protection management has become an enterprise necessity, driven in no small way by compliance issues," said Brad O'Neill, senior analyst at the Taneja Group, leading analysts in the storage technology market. "Bocada will continue to attract customers that face compliance challenges because it provides the required, vendor-neutral level of visibility that is not possible through backup applications themselves."

"As the regulatory environment in the United States and abroad continues to expand it places more responsibility on the enterprise for their global data protection operations," said Mark Silverman, CEO of Bocada. "These leading organizations selected Bocada as the compliance application of choice because it supports their evolving requirements for data protection management and compliance."

The agentless and vendor-neutral approach of Bocada to backup reporting and data protection management has enabled even their largest enterprise customers to deploy across their global data protection infrastructure often in less than three weeks. Case studies on enterprise clients such as Virgin Atlantic Airways and Unilever are available on the Bocada website showing improvements in their data protection success rates while reducing costs by millions of dollars per year and meeting policy compliance mandates.
