Firestreamer-DV Turns Digital Video Camcorders & VCRs into Reliable PC Data Storage Devices

1 February 2005

Cristalink Limited has released a new version of Firestreamer-DV, software that converts Digital Video camcorders and VCRs into reliable computer data storage devices. Firestreamer-DV seamlessly integrates with the Windows Backup Utility (NTBackup) and Microsoft's Removable Storage Manager, enabling NTBackup to access DV recorders just like normal tape drives. The software supports media spanning and data compression, and can be used for backing up all types of documents and files, from personal emails and images to Microsoft SQL and Exchange databases.

"Firestreamer-DV is a great solution particularly for those in the video production business", says Nick Repin, Cristalink CEO. "Our software allows video editors to back up large video projects onto the same equipment they use for video, saving them thousands of dollars in the purchase of DLT and DAT tape backup solutions".

Firestreamer-DV operates on Microsoft Windows XP and 2003 Server, and is compatible with most of the DV, Mini-DV, DVCAM and Digital8 PAL/NTSC camcorders and VCRs that have an IEEE-1394 (FireWire) interface. The software allows to store up to 8 GB of uncompressed data per 60 minutes of tape. For instance, a standard Mini-DV cassette can hold up to 12 GB of uncompressed data recorded in the Long Play mode, while a 3-hour DVCAM cassette holds up to 31 GB of data compressed at the ratio of 1.3:1 in the Standard Play mode.

Contrary to the popular belief that VCR-based backup solutions are unreliable, Firestreamer-DV offers superior data protection. Thanks to the advanced technology used, the software can recover up to a second of erroneous data every 32 seconds. In other words, even if two out of every 64 centimeters of videotape are damaged, Firestreamer is still able to correctly restore data (the numbers are approximate and apply to the NTSC SP mode).

Firestreamer-DV costs $46 USD for a single video recorder license, and may be ordered securely online. A fully functional version of the software can be downloaded for a free 30-day trial from Firestreamer's website at http://www.firestreamer.com.
