IBM and Kyocera Mita Corporation Collaborate to Develop Leading-Edge Printer Solutions

27 July 2006

across their Work Group systems, ranging from low-end monochrome single-function page laser printers to high-performance, multi-function mono and color laser systems.

As printers are upgraded, Kyocera, a member of Power.org, merely upgrades the IBM PowerPC processor with a faster model, using the same interface, ASIC and board design in order to obtain fast time-to-market for system refresh cycles.

"IBM continues to provide Kyocera Mita with excellent, energy-efficient technology while not compromising performance," said Makoto Koga, Executive Officer, Senior General Manager, Corporate R&D Division 3 of Kyocera Mita Corporation. "IBM's rich IP portfolio allows Kyocera to add features for differentiation at the system level which helps enable Kyocera's printer technology to be more successful. And finally, IBM offers a superior architecture for scalability from low-end to high-end systems."

Kyocera was one of the very first companies to understand the value of Power Architecture technology for printers. Ten years ago, Kyocera took a calculated risk and redesigned its printer systems to use IBM processors and ASIC technology.

IBM proposed a PowerPC 401-based system-on-chip design as an alternate CPU to provide additional speed. Since then, IBM has followed the IBM Power Architecture roadmap, with the 603e, 740 and various 750 models as well as the 405/440 core.

"The printer market is very competitive, both in Japan and globally," said Tom Reeves, vice president, semiconductor products and technology services, IBM Technology Collaboration Solutions. "Companies like Kyocera Mita are looking for low-power, high-performance solutions, and IBM has the answers. IBM provides the technologies to make it easier for Kyocera to provide competitive systems in rapid time to a constantly changing market."
