Thenew lab will also strengthen IBM's presence in the Russian market where ithas a number of mainframe customers, including the Central Bank of RussianFederation; Russian Railways and the oil and gas company Surgutneftegazwhich depend on the mainframe's reliability and security to run their corebusiness applications. "The lab joins a globally integrated network of IBM R&D facilitiesaround the world that drive the development of IBM's most advancedcomputing systems." The Russian lab already is staffed by more than 40 employees. One of itsfirst projects will focus on part of the operating system for the System zmainframe. The Russian team will help enhance the Data Facility StorageManagement System (DFSMS) to increase speed and capacity in line withexpectations of mainframe clients worldwide. Russian engineers also willcollaborate with colleagues in the U.S. and Germany on development andtesting for the next generation of IBM BladeCenter systems. To support the establishment of the new lab, IBM will work closely withsome of the leading Russian educational institutions, including MoscowBauman University, Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Electronicsand Mathematics, Novosibirsk State University, Nizhny Novgorod StateUniversity, St. Petersburg State University and the Russian Academy ofSciences. IBM also will extend its search for talent to the CommonwealthIndependent States (CIS), including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belorussia andthe Ukraine. "The establishment of the new lab clearly demonstrates the value that IBMplaces on the technical talent and expertise in Russia," said KirillKorniliev, Country General Manager, IBM East Europe/Asia. "It is worthnoting that 50 percent of university students in Russia are studyingscience and technology and that Russia has one of the highest levels ofresearchers in the active population anywhere in the world. We want to tapthose skills." Creation of the lab strengthens IBM presence in Russia, where it was firstestablished in 1974. It currently has direct presence in the 10 largestcities of Russia as well as in the Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Overthe past five years, IBM Russia's annual revenue has grown in double-digitfigures, including 29 percent in 2005 and 75 percent in 2004. IBM has established a number of strategic facilities in Russia in recentyears, including the IBM Linux Competency Center in 2003, the IBMInnovation Center for Business Partners in 2004 and the Energy CompetencyCenter in 2005 in collaboration with Intel.
