Imation Expands Commitment to 'New Breed' of Data Backup Technology

Imation Corp (NYSE: IMN), a worldwide leader in removable data storage media, today extended its commitment to the "new breed" of data backup technology -- removable hard disk storage. Earlier today, the company announced a licensing agreement with ProStor to manufacture, market and sell ProStor's RDX(R) storage systems under the Imation brand. Coupled with Imation's previous announcements regarding its Ulysses(TM) and Odyssey(TM) removable hard disk drive technologies, the company continues to demonstrate its ongoing focus on delivering a removable media portfolio that meets the growing data storage needs of its customers.

Removable hard disk drive technologies continue to gain traction in the marketplace by providing an option for backup and restore that is also removable and expandable. With current removable hard disk drive offerings in the consumer market, including the Imation Micro Hard Drive and the Memorex Mega TravelDrive(TM), and Imation's Ulysses technology for the enterprise market, the introduction of the RDX system and the Odyssey dock and hard disk cartridge positions Imation as a leader in the removable hard disk drive space, offering the broadest selection of removable hard disk products.

Imation Odyssey Dock and Hard Disk Cartridge

Imation's soon-to-be available Odyssey dock and hard disk cartridge is an ultra-reliable removable hard disk drive backup solution for companies seeking entry-level, disk-based data storage options. Odyssey cartridges, (initially in 40 GB, 80 GB and 120 GB capacities) contain a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive and the Odyssey docking station fits into any 5.25 inch or 3.5-inch drive bay, creating a solution that enables efficient and low-cost backup. The solution can be used with any drag-and-drop Windows or Macintosh operating system as well as most storage management software packages offered by independent software providers.

Some of the benefits the Odyssey solution provides include forward and backward compatibility, cartridge reliability and shock resistance and connector reliability. Ideal for small office/home office (SOHO) customers, desktop or laptop platforms, Imation's initial Odyssey solution offering, an external dock using a USB 2.0 interface, an Imation-designed RHDD cartridge and backup software for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems, will be generally available in December.

Imation's RDX System

The RDX removable hard disk cartridge and drive are designed to meet the critical backup needs of small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) that require easy-to-use, reliable, fast and portable storage. The RDX system uses a rugged, reliable disk cartridge that backs up like a tape drive and features the performance advantages of a disk-to-disk system. The RDX cartridge maps to available single and dual-platter hard disk drives, providing uncompressed or native capacities of 40GB to 160GB. In addition, RDX technology provides forward and backward compatibility -- allowing users to upgrade to higher capacity cartridges without having to buy a new drive, and the drives are certified with most popular SMB backup software products.

Imation's initial RDX system offering will be generally available in Q1 2007.

Imation Ulysses Technology

When initially announced in October 2005, Imation's Ulysses technology became the world's first disk-enhanced removable media cartridge. Developed with the data storage needs of enterprise users in mind, Imation's Ulysses technology is a SATA 2.5-inch disk drive in an industry-standard tape cartridge. Used with a tape drive emulator, this disk-enhanced removable media accelerates backup and restore performance and resides within a tape library. The disk-to-disk solution fits in any standard tape drive bay and is recognized by the host, backup software and storage management software as a standard tape drive.
