Lahair Raises Missions Over Travs 9-7

30 April 2006

Wolff Stadium, San Antonio, TX - Bryan Lahair cracked two home runs to lead the San Antonio Missions (9-13) to a 9-7 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (9-14). Lahair hit two solo home runs and a single and finished with three RBI as the Missions took the last three games of the four-game series. Jeff Clement (2) and Justin Ruchti (2) also hit home runs off losing pitcher RHP Rafael Rodriguez (0-1) who did not make it past the second inning. Although the Travs trailed by eight runs after a seven-run second inning by the Missions, Arkansas did not roll over rallying for six runs in the fourth capped by a three-run homer by Dwaine Bacon (2). David Gates also added a two-run double, but the Travs managed just five hits in the game. San Antonio RHP Chad Fillinger (2-0) earned the win in relief by pitching four shutout innings and setting down the last 12 batters he faced. Currently on their first three-game winning streak, San Antonio sent the Travs to their 11th loss in 14 games.

After striking out the first two batters of the game, Rodriguez was taken deep by Clement on a 1-0 pitch to right field for a 1-0 Missions lead.

Rodriguez allowed a leadoff home run by Lahair in the second inning for a 2-0 Missions lead and then the wheels fell off. Jon Nelson and Jesus Guzman followed with singles before Ruchti yanked a three-run homer to left field for a 5-0 Missions lead. Rodriguez then walked two batters and hit another before being pulled in favor of RHP Allen Buckley. After getting a force out at home, Buckley walked Wladimir Balentien to force in a run. Then Lahair grounded to the hole at second base with Michael Garciaparra scoring on the play. When Jon Nelson reached on an infield single to the shortstop hole, Clement scored from third for an 8-0 lead.

LHP Jason Mackintosh held the Travs to no hits over three innings, but he walked Matt Brown and Mike Eylward to begin the fourth. With one out, Gates drilled a double over the centerfielder's head to score two runs. Then Eric Rodland singled to move Gates to third base. Devin Day followed with a chopper to third base and Gates attempted to score. Guzman threw wild to the plate for an error that scored Gates. Bacon followed with a three-run homer to left field to get the Travs within 8-6.

Buckley left the game after tossing three shutout innings. RHP Aaron Pullin relieved for the sixth and allowed Lahair's second home run, a solo shot with one out to center field, for a 9-6 Missions lead.

Fillinger entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed a leadoff single to Matt Brown before setting down the next 12 hitters.

RHP Mike Flannery entered the game for the ninth but walked Rodland to begin the inning. Rodland took second base on a defensive indifference and scored when Aaron Peel grounded a single to center with two outs. Brandon Wood came to the plate as the tying run, but RHP Craig James struck him out on a high fastball for his first save.

Time of game was 2:52 and the paid attendance was 4,695.

The Travs begin a three-game series at Corpus Christi on Sunday afternoon. Arkansas has RHP Chris Hunter (1-2, 7.58 ERA) taking on the Hooks' RHP Chance Douglass (1-1, 4.91 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
