Media Breakfast Briefing on Mexico's 2006 Elections28 March 2006
News Advisory: The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is hosting an on-the-record media breakfast briefing about Mexico's upcoming presidential elections. On July 2, Mexicans will go to the polls to elect a new president and congress for the first time since President Fox became the first opposition candidate to end 71 years of uninterrupted rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Current polls give a lead to left-of- center candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD); however, both Felipe Calderon, of Fox's National Action Party (PAN), and Roberto Madrazo of the PRI remain close in the polls with a chance of winning in July. As part of its ongoing activities on these elections, the Mexico Institute is hosting a full-day conference on March 31 to discuss possible outcomes and implications. At the private media breakfast prior to the conference, Alejandro Moreno, the head of polling for Reforma newspaper and a leading scholar of public opinion, will review the trends in the polls and discuss potential scenarios for the elections. He will provide a detailed profile of the issues that have proved most important during the campaign and appear to be influencing preferences in the election campaign. Jesus Silva-Herzog Marquen, a preeminent scholar and host of a popular television program on current events, will address the implications of the elections for Mexico's future governance. In particular, he will look at the platforms of the different candidates and how these may provide a shift in foreign, economic, and social policy. The moderator of the discussion will be Jacqueline Peschard, a former citizen counselor of Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute and professor at the National University. The Wilson Center's Mexico Institute also maintains an ongoing website on the Mexican elections which includes updates on breaking news, recent polls, and timely analysis of developments: http://www.wilsoncenter.org/mexicoelections Dr. Alejandro Moreno is the editor of polling and public opinion at Reforma newspaper.
