Minicozzi's 11th-inning single stops Giants' losing skid30 May 2006
A walk off line drive single in the bottom of the 11th inning by Mark Minicozzi snapped the San Jose Giants four game losing streak as they beat the Modesto Nuts 2-1 on Memorial Day. The win stretches the Giants division lead over Modesto to five games, as San Jose sits atop the Northern Division with a 31-19 record followed by the 26-24 Nuts. Justin Hedrick pitched the 11th inning to pick up the win. The reliever improved his record to 2-0 on the 2006 season. Hedrick was not the only impressive Giants reliever. Ben Cox and Brian Anderson combined to hold the Nuts scoreless over their five innings pitched. Anderson fired three scoreless innings while not allowing a single hit. The Giants closer struck out four. Giants starter Gregorio Martinez was equally dominant in the right hander's five innings of work. Martinez allowed one earned run on three hits in the no decision. Fans at Municipal stadium were treated to free baseball, as the Giants could not finish off the rival Nuts in the first nine innings. After Hedrick's near perfect 11th, the Giants stepped to the plate with a purpose in the bottom of the frame. After Marcus Sanders flied out to open the inning, San Jose loaded the bases on a John Bowker walk, Pat Dobson infield single, and a Brian Horwitz intentional walk for team RBI leader Mark Minicozzi. The Giants second baseman showed why he leads the team in RBI with 29 as he laced a line drive over the Nuts second baseman that scored Bowker to win the game. Outfielder Joey Dyche tripled in the other Giants run with two outs in the 5th. After avoiding the sweep to Modesto on Monday afternoon, the San Jose Giants will start an eight game road trip where they will visit Stockton, Bakersfield, and Modesto. Lefty Jesus Reina (3-1, 5.83) will take the mound in the first game of the road trip on Tuesday. The Ports will counter with right hander Scott Druker (3-4, 5.20) in the series opener. First pitch at Banner Island Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05. Be sure to check the San Jose Giants official website for a link to listen to the game live.
