New Mexico Manufacturing: Plants Up 54; Jobs Up 700

28 February 2006

New Mexico gained 54 manufacturing plants and 700 jobs in 2005 according to the 2006 New Mexico Manufacturers Register, an industrial guide published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI), Evanston, IL.

MNI's private survey reports New Mexico is home to 2,325 manufacturing companies employing 55,659 workers, compared to the 2,271 plants and 54,959 jobs reported a year earlier.

According to the five-year analysis conducted by Manufacturers' News, New Mexico has regained several thousand manufacturing jobs over the past two years. Between 2001 and 2003 New Mexico lost 4,493 jobs, but has since recovered, adding 3,821 manufacturing jobs between 2003 and 2005.

"Manufacturing productivity continues to outpace the gains in the rest of the economy, growing 4% a year as companies adapt their business models to utilize new technology and compete in a global economy," said Tom Dubin, President of Manufacturers' News, Inc.

Nearly half of New Mexico's manufacturers are located in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. These two cities account for 1,097 plants or 47% of the state's manufacturers. Albuquerque alone accounts for 871 plants or 37% of New Mexico's manufacturers. MNI data reports these two cities gained a total of 30 plants in 2005.

New Mexico's top two industries indicated growth in 2005 according to industry data compiled by the 2006 Register. Industrial machinery and equipment grew by 7 plants while printing and publishing grew by 12 plants. These two industries remain New Mexico's largest, accounting for 23% of New Mexico's manufacturers.

Detailed information on all of New Mexico's 2,325 companies can be found in the 2006 New Mexico Manufacturers Register, available in print for $72. The 251-page directory provides an in-depth company profile of up to 30 facts, including addresses, phone/fax numbers, web/email addresses, product(s) manufactured, names and titles of key executives, area of distribution, annual sales, number of employees, brand names, year established and more.

MNI's New Mexico data is also available on CD-ROM for $96 to $275. Users may select manufacturing companies using thirteen different criteria, including area or zip code, county, SIC, sales volume, number of employees, title and more.
