On deck for the San Jose Giants30 May 2006
THE SAN JOSE GIANTS...open a four game set versus the Stockton Ports. All four games will be played at Banner Island Ballpark. The Giants will be the home team in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader since this series is the last one played between the Giants and Ports in the first half of the season. Entering the mid-week series, San Jose holds a five game lead over the Modesto Nuts for the Northern Division Championship. FREE BASEBALL...San Jose won Memorial Day's series finale against the Modesto Nuts with a walk off base hit by second baseman Mark Minicozzi. The Giants had lost the first four games of the series and were in danger of seeing their division lead shrink to a mere three games. However, San Jose avoided the sweep on Minicozzi's team leading 29th RBI of the season. PEREIRA LOSES FIRST GAME OF SERIES...Last Sunday afternoon, Nick Pereira lost his first decision of the season. The right hander now owns a record of 6-1 with an impressive ERA of 1.93. Even after allowing four runs over seven innings on Sunday, Pereira's 1.93 ERA still rests atop the California League leaders while his 6 wins ties him for the league lead. THE TOP FREQUENT FLYER...Minicozzi not only leads the Giants in RBI, the second baseman currently has a 20 game road hitting streak, the longest in the California League this season. In all twenty road games during the 2006 season, Minicozzi has recorded at least one base hit. San Jose travels to Stockton on Tuesday night where Minicozzi will look to keep the streak alive. THE STOCKTON PORTS...come into the series trailing San Jose by 7 ½ games with a record of 23-26. The Ports have struggled at Banner Island Ballpark this season. Stockton owns a home record of 8-16 in comparison to the team's 15-10 record on the road. Stockton's leading hitter, left fielder Travis Buck, was promoted to AA Midland. Before his promotion on May 17th, the Nuts outfielder hit .349 with 17 doubles and 23 extra base hits.
