PowerZip 7.06 Provides Right-Click Zipping and Unzipping under Windows XP x64

19 July 2005

Trident Software Pty Ltd is pleased to announce the release of PowerZip 7.06, a new version of its file compression software for Windows. PowerZip 7.06 is one of the first compression tools to provide shell extensions (integration with the right-click menu in Windows Explorer) compatible with the 64-bit edition of Microsoft Windows XP.

Compatibility with Windows XP, x64 Edition

With the recently-released 64-bit version of Windows XP set to become increasingly popular for high-performance environments, many users will be looking for 64-bit compatibility when selecting new software. And while Windows XP x64 is generally backward-compatible with 32-bit applications, the compatibility does not extend to shell extensions.

Shell extensions are application add-ins that extend Windows Explorer. Most Zip programs, including PowerZip, provide shell extensions that add Zip / Unzip items to the right-click menu of Windows Explorer. This feature enables users to quickly create and extract compressed files directly from Windows Explorer / My Computer.

However, because of the lack of backward-compatibility for shell extensions, many cutting-edge users switching to 64-bit Windows will be annoyed to find that they are no longer able to Zip / Unzip from the right-click menu of Windows Explorer using their old Zip program. Unfortunately, most Zip programs do not currently provide shell extensions compatible with Windows XP x64.

PowerZip 7.06 is a notable exception. PowerZip 7.06 provides both 32-bit and 64-bit shell extensions, automatically installing the correct version depending on the user's version of Windows. This means one less obstacle on the upgrade path to Windows XP x64.

About PowerZip

Commercially-available since 1998, PowerZip is a file compression program that offers an alternative user interface and a comprehensive set of features for today's file compression and data security needs.

PowerZip enables users to create password-protected Zip files secured by 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption. Security-conscious users will appreciate this feature when storing confidential documents and files or sending them through insecure channels, such as e-mail. PowerZip's implementation of AES is fully compatible with WinZip 9, allowing for easy exchange of encrypted files with WinZip users. PowerZip also provides standard Zip encryption for compatibility with older Zip programs.

PowerZip supports the BWT (Burrows-Wheeler Transform) compression method to provide a higher level of compression than is normally available in Zip files.

Another feature which sets PowerZip apart from most other Zip programs is PowerZip's built-in support for Unix archive formats. PowerZip can create and extract .tar, .tar.gz and .tar.bz2 archives, enabling users to easily exchange files with machines running Linux and other Unix variants.

System Requirements

PowerZip 7.06 runs under Windows XP (Professional, Home or x64), Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95. PowerZip requires LHA, ARJ and HA programs to work with the corresponding archives types.

Availability

The price of one copy of PowerZip is $20 (US), which includes technical support via e-mail and unlimited upgrades. Quantity discounts and discounts for government and non-profit organizations are available. A fully functional evaluation copy of PowerZip can be downloaded from Trident Software's web site -
