Promise Previews Next-Generation Low-Cost SAN Storage Solutions for iSCSI

11 March 2005

Promise Technology, Inc., originator and global leader in SATA RAID data protection and storage solutions, today is showcasing a sneak preview of its next-generation VTrak M-Class SATA RAID solutions at the CeBIT 2005 in Hannover, Germany. These highly resilient, high-performance external RAID storage systems will incorporate a host of system improvements including double the performance of Promise's existing storage systems, enhanced system flexibility, and broad SAN support through either iSCSI or Fibre Channel host interfaces.

For ultimate storage flexibility, the six systems in the VTrak M-Class line will be available in 8-bay, 12-bay, and 15-bay system options (2U, 2U and 3U, respectively) with dual-port host-interface iSCSI or Fibre Channel models available in each size. The new VTrak M-Class systems incorporate a host of advanced features such as LUN masking and mapping that improve support for SANs and large clusters. And for improved data throughput, the VTrak M-Class also adds support for the latest SATA 3Gb/s hard disk drives as well as Native Command Queuing (NCQ).

Whether it is connected through iSCSI and Ethernet or a traditional Fibre Channel storage network, a Storage Area Network (SAN) connects servers to a centralized pool of storage devices enabling multiple servers to flexibly allocate storage across the network. By using a VTrak M-Class array in a SAN architecture, users can benefit from server failover protection and flexible capacity allocation for increased capacity utilization. For businesses that haven't deployed Fibre Channel storage networks, Promise's VTrak M-Class iSCSI series offers iSCSI Ethernet-based SAN technology for an affordable solution with SAN functionality. For businesses that want to leverage their existing Fibre Channel storage network, Promise's VTrak M-Class Fibre Channel series offers the exceptional performance and high-capacity of SATA RAID storage with traditional SAN connectivity.

"With strong demand driving over 500 iSCSI customers of Promise's VTrak 15200 SATA RAID system during its first six months of availability, Promise has established a strong position in the market for low-cost SAN storage solutions," said Suresh Panikar, vice president of worldwide channel sales and marketing, Promise Technology, Inc. "With Promise's new VTrak M-Class SATA RAID systems, we will bring a new level of enterprise-class storage system features, Fibre Channel connectivity, and improved SAN flexibility to the high-volume small to medium business market worldwide."

The CeBIT demonstration will also highlight Promise Technology's support for the next generation of SATA drives that deliver data throughput at 3 Gb/s. The demonstration will feature Hitachi Deskstar hard drives, which support this latest performance breakthrough.

"Hitachi continues to innovate in the area of hard drive performance and capacity. We were first to ship hard drives with 3 Gb/s data transfer rates, which are ideal for use in bandwidth-intensive applications," said Becky Smith, vice president of marketing, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. "We are pleased to be collaborating with Promise at CeBIT to showcase the performance benefits of 3 Gb/s SATA."

To demonstrate the VTrak M-Class systems support for Native Command Queuing, the CeBIT demonstration will also include Maxtor® MaXLine III drives with Native Command Queuing.

"Native Command Queuing brings new performance and flexibility to network storage environments. Maxtor's high-capacity MaXLine III drives with native command queuing enable the drives to reorder and execute up to 32 commands for increased system performance," said Kevin Wittmer, Maxtor's senior director of technical marketing. "By combining Promise's VTrak M-Class storage systems with MaXLine III drives, customers will be able to see the performance benefits of NCQ in a cost-efficient solution for high-capacity RAID storage."

In addition to presenting its broad offering of SATA storage solutions -- including ASIC controllers, SATA RAID controllers, RAID 6, and external storage systems -- at CeBIT 2005 in Hall 1, Stand 8e 10, Promise is also presenting complementary storage solutions from many of its strategic partners including Q-Logic, Alacritech, and more. CeBIT, the world's largest information technology conference, takes place in Hannover, Germany, March 10-16.
