Sun Microsystems Earns 'Product of the Year' Award in Backup Hardware Category of SearchStorage.com and Storage Magazine Awards

31 March 2006

Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that its StorageTek L1400M automated tape library was honored as 'Product of the Year' in the Backup Hardware category as part of the 2005 'Product of the Year' awards hosted by SearchStorage.com and Storage magazine, earning the Gold Award to claim top honors in this category.

The 2005 'Product of the Year' awards were judged by the editors of TechTarget's SearchStorage.com and Storage magazine, in conjunction with a team of users, industry experts, analysts and consultants. Judges selected the 2005 Products of the Year among storage products introduced, upgraded and shipped between October 26, 2004 and October 28, 2005, judging product entries on criteria including innovation, performance, ease of integration into existing environments, ease of use and manageability, functionality and value.

"Sun's StorageTek tape libraries are integral components to our customers' data storage infrastructures and information lifecycle management strategies, delivering world-class performance, reliability and flexibility that maximizes the value of customers' storage investments," said Nigel Dessau, vice president tape business, Sun Microsystems. "This honor is a testament to the advanced functionality and scalability delivered with the StorageTek L1400M tape library, distinguishing it as a very popular solution within the end user community."

Featuring Sun's proprietary Any Cartridge Any Slot(TM) technology and offering true logical partitioning, Sun's premier StorageTek automated tape libraries are the only libraries available on the market today to offer seamless mixed media support across Sun's StorageTek T-Series enterprise tape drives, midrange LTO and SDLT drives. The L1400M helps mitigate business risks in environments with fast and unpredictable data growth, meeting customers' evolving data protection and archiving needs in large, distributed open systems environments. Additionally, the L1400M enables IT managers to perform non-disruptive drive and media swap-outs, assuring continuous operations and enabling customers to quickly respond to changing business requirements.

According to Storage Magazine, "Sun Microsystems Inc.'s L1400M solves a top problem in tape: the ability to use four different tape formats within a single library, and it's a solution that's been a long time coming... As one judge put it, 'finally, somebody did the right thing for their customers.'" (Storage Magazine, February 2006 issue, Volume 4, Number 12).

StorageTek automated tape libraries from Sun Microsystems continue to set the standard for enterprise-class performance and reliability, leading the tape storage automation market with the fastest, highest-quality, most space-efficient technology available today. These advanced tape libraries help customers better manage and protect data with highly productive, consolidated storage and archiving while enabling them to save money by better aligning the cost of protecting data with the data's changing value over time.
