Vice Chair of the Energy-Commerce Committee Endorses H.R.4282, Health Freedom Protection Act

22 May 2006

SAN DIEGO, CA (PRWEB) May 20, 2006 -- Michael Bilirakis (R-FL), the powerful ranking Republican member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee (having jurisdiction over the Food and Drug Administration) announced today that he has become one of twenty-two congressmen co-sponsoring H.R 4282, the Health Freedom Protection Act. The bill would end FDA and FTC censorship of nutrient-disease relationship claims, would require FTC to bear the burden of proof in deceptive advertising cases, and would deny FDA the power to waive conflicts of interest on its Food Advisory Committee panels.

«With the support of Congressman Bilirakis, we have just achieved a milestone in the movement of this bill in the House of Representatives,» said attorney Jonathan W. Emord, chairman of the 110-company member Coalition to End FDA and FTC Censorship. «We are most grateful for the Vice-Chair's support and will now move to encourage all members of the Committee to follow his good example.»

«It's great to have Congressman Bilirakis joining many of his colleagues in sponsoring The Health Freedom Protection Act, H.R. 4282» said Steve Wallach, General Manager of Youngevity, one of the Health Freedom Coalition's founding members.

The bill was introduced in November 2005 by Congressman Ron Paul of Texas. It has acquired broad bi-partisan support in the House. It has not yet been introduced in the Senate. The following members of Congress are co-sponsors of the bill with Bilirakis: Ron E. Paul; Peter A. DeFazio; Roscoe Bartlett; Jeff Miller; Thomas G. Tancredo; Dana Rohrabacher; Chris Cannon; Cynthia McKinney; Virgil Goode; Scott Garrett; Walter Jones, Jr.; John J. Duncan; Dan Burton; Rob Bishop; C.L. Butch Otter; JoAnn S. Davis; Lynn Woolsey; Randy Kuhl; Jack Kingston; Marilyn Musgrave; and John Hostettler.

Youngevity (formerly American Longevity) has submitted several Health Claim Petitions to the FDA and is responsible for the authorized Health Claim Petition for Selenium and its relationship to Cancer Risk Reduction. Youngevity has helped to defend the Health Claim Petition process through the courts and has submitted many official comments to the FDA on behalf of the nutrition industry, all in an effort to help consumers have more access to truthful information in order to base a more informed decision regarding their own health and wellness.
